Why do pilots tell us the plane’s altitude, outside temperature, and speed? Does it matter?

Answer by Thomas Zerbarini:

Well, I can tell you from my experience, if I fail to update passengers during the flight on weather, progress and all those nice things pilots say over the intercom. I'll get a few passengers comment on why didn't we talk with them or give them any updates. Many passengers expect it and it comforts them to know there is a human in the front of the plane and that they care.

It also gives the sensation of progress in a seemingly non-moving environment in the cabin. Also, some landmarks are interesting and worth pointing out.
